The Economics of Protecting Tiger Populations: Linking Household Behaviour to Poaching and Prey Depletion
نویسندگان
چکیده
The tiger (Panthera tigris) is classified as endangered (IUCN, 2000). The population of wild tigers continues to decline, despite substantial conservation investments by governments and international agencies. This paper presents a formal economic analysis of the two most imminent threats to the survival of wild tigers: poaching of wild tigers and hunting their prey. A model is developed to examine the interactions between wild tigers and farm households living in and around tiger habitats. The analysis extends the most recent model of tiger demography to incorporate predator-prey interactions and explores the sensitivity of tiger populations to key economic parameters. To our knowledge this is the first formal investigation into the economic causes of declining tiger populations. It is hoped that the analysis may contribute to the policy debate on how best to protect one of the world’s most endangered wild cats. 1 School of Economics, University of Adelaide, Adelaide 5001, Australia. متن کاملEvaluation of Tiger Conservation in India: the use of comparative effectiveness research
Tigers, the largest of the felids, are now a globally threatened species with only approximately 3000 wild tigers surviving. India contains about 60% or 2000 of the animals, yet despite aggressive conservation efforts the number of tigers is declining. The causes of the decline are prey depletion, habitat destruction and poaching. Over the past 30 years of tiger conservation efforts in the vari...
متن کاملStability analysis of a fractional order prey-predator system with nonmonotonic functional response
In this paper, we introduce fractional order of a planar fractional prey-predator system with a nonmonotonic functional response and anti-predator behaviour such that the adult preys can attack vulnerable predators. We analyze the existence and stability of all possible equilibria. Numerical simulations reveal that anti-predator behaviour not only makes the coexistence of the prey and predator ...
متن کاملGlucocorticoid Stress Responses of Reintroduced Tigers in Relation to Anthropogenic Disturbance in Sariska Tiger Reserve in India
Tiger (Panthera tigris), an endangered species, is under severe threat from poaching, habitat loss, prey depletion and habitat disturbance. Such factors have been reported causing local extermination of tiger populations including in one of the most important reserves in India, namely Sariska Tiger Reserve (STR) in northwestern India. Consequently, tigers were reintroduced in STR between 2008 a...
متن کاملDYNAMIC COMPLEXITY OF A THREE SPECIES COMPETITIVE FOOD CHAIN MODEL WITH INTER AND INTRA SPECIFIC COMPETITIONS
The present article deals with the inter specific competition and intra-specific competition among predator populations of a prey-dependent three component food chain model consisting of two competitive predator sharing one prey species as their food. The behaviour of the system near the biologically feasible equilibria is thoroughly analyzed. Boundedness and dissipativeness of the system are e...
